Spotlight on GEiGS® by Tropic Biosciences — A Glimpse of the Future in Precision Breeding

November 19, 2025

At our recent technology showcase co-hosted with Tropic Biosciences and the Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science at NUS, we highlighted GEiGS®, an innovative gene-editing platform that combines precise DNA edits with the natural power of RNA interference (RNAi). Instead of adding foreign genes, GEiGS® makes tiny adjustments to an organism’s own non-coding DNA, enabling highly targeted and heritable gene silencing.

Why GEiGS® Stands Out

  • Minimal genomic changes reduce unintended effects.
  • Compatible with major editing tools like CRISPR, TALENs and ZFNs.
  • Faster trait development, especially for disease resistance.
  • Potential for non-GMO classification, simplifying regulatory pathways.

Real-World Applications

GEiGS® is being explored across a wide range of crops—from corn and rice to vegetables and tropical plants—as well as in livestock (e.g. fish, poultry, bovine, porcine), where it may help improve disease resistance and animal welfare.

Big Picture

Overall, GEiGS® represents a promising step forward for sustainable, efficient and resilient agricultural practices. By enabling precise, flexible, and non-transgenic trait development, it could reduce reliance on chemical pesticides and accelerate the development cycles for more resilient crops and animals.

If you would like to explore the potential of using GEiGS® as a tool for your production needs, feel free to contact Mr Mihir Kekre, Head of Commercial Partnerships at Tropic Biosciences, to discuss further.
